Jammu and Kashmir State is predominantly an agrarian economy with 75% of population engaged in agriculture and allied sectors. The agro-climatic diversity of the state varying from sub tropical in Jammu ,temperate in Kashmir and cold arid in Ladakh makes it ideal for varied cultivation. The District Kishtwar being part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir is extending over an area of 7737 Sq.Km having 11 Tehsils and 13 Blocks. There are 156 Revenue villages. The terrain of the District is tough and inaccessible. There are many areas to which the connectivity remain disrupted for more than 6 months. The valley of Warwan, Marwah and Dacchan area are far flung and backward. The economy of the District is agricultural and the non working population consisting of Old age, destitute persons with different abilities (Disabled) constitute a great chunk of the population of the district. The Department of Social Welfare which came into existence in 1960 is working for the weaker sections of the society like Old age, Destitutes, widows and Disabled etc in the District .
The Department is committed for the welfare of underprivileged section of society in district Kishtwar by implementation of the Centrally sponsored and State sponsored schemes. The department has proved as an instrument for removing distress of underprivileged classes of society in the District through amelioration and anti poverty target oriented measures. .
