Erstwhile District Doda was formed under Council Order No. 64-C OF 1948, dated:- 17 April 1948.In the beginning the District Doda consisted of three Tehsils of Ramban, Bhadarwah and Kishtwar, which were separated from District Udhampur and annexed to this new District. Doda was designated the Headquarter of this new District. Kishtwar the land of saffron and sapphire was an independent hill state during the medieval period. Maharaja Gulab Singh, the Dogra ruler of Jammu, usurped it in 1821AD. Kishtwar is bounded by Ladakh/Zanskar on the East, Himachal Pradesh on the South, Kashmir Valley (District Anantnag) on the North West and District Doda on the West .The Plateau of Kishtwar is 5300 feet or 1631 meters above sea level. It lies between longitude 75.25 East & latitude 34.10 North. Kishtwar town is situated 280 km far from Srinager, 229 Kms from Jammu & 60 Km from Pul Doda. The new District Kishtwar has been created by Land mark decision of Govt. vide Govt. Order No. 233-GAD -OF 2007 formed major Part of the Erstwhile District Doda. Kishtwar Tehsil was upgraded to the level of Sub Division in 1973. The sub Division was Administered by the institution of Sub Divisional Magistrate since its creation i.e., 1973 up to 31-03-2007. After a spell of around 34 years, the historical decision taken by the Govt. during 2007 for creation and establishment of new District Kishtwar. The District Kishtwar is spread over a large area ranging from the Border of HP on South, Ladakh on East & Kashmir Valley (Distt. Anantnag) on North West and District Doda on the West. The erstwhile District Doda comprised of an area of 11691 Sq. Km out of which earlier Sub Division Kishtwar (now Distt. Kishtwar) amounted to 7737 Sq. Kms. of the total area & above 40% of total population of erstwhile District Doda. District Kishtwar comprises of 13 CD Blocks namely Drabshalla, Kishtwar, Inderwal, Nagseni, Padder, Marwah, Warwan, Dachhan, Bunjwah, Thakrie, Palmar, Mughalmaidan & Trigam. District comprises of Nine Tehsils Kishtwar, Padder, Chhatro, Marwah, Drabshalla, Machail, Dachhan, Warwan, Nagseni, Mughalmaidan & Bunjwah with a total population of 2,30,696 as per census 2011.
